A 21-year-old Los Angeles County man was fatally shot in a City Heights park during an apparent argument over a radio, which was then stolen, police said Tuesday.

The victim, identified by the county medical examiner’s office as Jose Luis Ramirez of Cudahy, was found shot in the back on a sidewalk in the 4400 block of Wightman Street at 9:51 p.m. Monday, Lt. Tom Orden said. He said officers had responded to reports of gunshots fired at the adjacent City Heights Community Center and Park.

Ramirez was apparently shot in the park but made his way out to the sidewalk, Lt. John Welter said. He was taken by paramedics to Mercy Hospital, where he died at 10:28 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Witnesses told police that Ramirez and a companion had been arguing with several men, apparently over the sale of a radio, when one of the other men opened fire, Orden said. The radio was then taken, Welter said.

Ramirez and his friend, who was not injured and who talked to officers at the scene, were unarmed, Welter said.
