UCSD Relay Team Sets Record

The women’s 400-meter relay team from UC San Diego set a school record while qualifying for the NCAA Division III track and field finals during Wednesday’s preliminaries at Colby College in Waterville, Me.

Yvette Marzullo, Erica Washington, Renee Sprowl and Michelle Milledge ran the fourth-fastest qualifying time, 47.96 seconds, breaking the school record of 48.31.

Other UCSD athletes who qualified for Friday’s finals were: pole vaulter Paul Johnson (14 feet, 10 1/4 inches), hammer throwers Scott Sargent (200-3, the day’s top throw), Jeff Taylor (186-7, the second best qualifying mark), and Paul Cogbill (182-3). Sargent also qualified first in the discus (165-5).

SWIMMING

Senior swimmer Mary Bergen was named the University of San Diego’s selection for the NCAA Woman of the Year, the school announced Wednesday.

The award recognizes athletes for their accomplishments in sports, scholarship and community service and leadership. As USD’s choice, Bergen is now eligible to win the honor at the state and national levels.

Bergen was team captain her junior and senior years, and maintained a 3.04 GPA, earning a communications degree. She holds USD’s 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.32), 100 butterfly (59.96) and 200 individual medley (2:13.19) records and is a two-time team MVP and a two-time Second Honors Dean’s List selection.
