West Los Angeles : Students Win Moscow Trip

Share

Five University High School students will fly to Moscow next month for a nine-day study tour as winners in a competition that tested local teens’ knowledge of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Alon Amitai, Nicklas Akers, Jeffeeu Twu, Zanja Yudell and Eun-Sook Kim were among 55 finalists in the Ambassadors to Europe Competition, sponsored by the Los Angeles Times in Education program and Lufthansa Airlines to promote knowledge of this rapidly changing part of the world.

Teams from public and private schools throughout Southern California wrote essays and competed orally, answering such questions as why the Lenin Library closed (it was declared unsafe), who said communism fits Poland like “a saddle on a cow” (Stalin) and what Moldavians call their new republic (Dneister Moldavian Republic).
