Tritons’ Washington, Lyday Advance in Track
UC San Diego’s Erica Washington and Jill Lyday advanced to the NCAA Division III track finals Thursday in Waterville, Me., in the 100 meters and discus events.
Washington reached Saturday’s final by winning her 100-meter semifinal heat in a school record 12.04 seconds. Lyday threw the discus 137 feet-4 inches in reaching Saturday’s final. UCSD’s men’s and women’s teams have advanced 11 of their 15 competitors into the finals.
TENNIS
Senior Eva Olivarez is San Diego State’s NCAA Women of the Year. Olivarez, a two-time Western Athletic Conference player of the year, was picked because of her athletic and academic excellence and her community service work.
BASKETBALL
Yvette Angel, SDSU’s assistant women’s coach, has resigned. Angel had worked under head coach Beth Burns since 1989.
BASEBALL
SDSU junior pitcher Benji Grigsby was named to Baseball America’s second team All-American team. Earlier, Grigsby was selected to participate in the U.S. Olympic baseball team trials.
