Scott Sargeant of UC San Diego set an NCAA Division III hammer throw record with a hurl of 211 feet, 6 inches Friday to win that event for the second time in three years at the Division III track and field championships in Waterville, Me.
Sargeant, a senior who finished second in the hammer last year after winning in 1990, surpassed the mark of 209-10 set by Jay Hibert of Pomona Pitzer in 1985.
Sargeant was one of three Tritons to place in the hammer. Senior Paul Cogbill finished third at 189-9, and junior Jeff Taylor was fourth at 189-5.
Sargeant also finished 10th in the discus at 151-6 and senior Paul Johnson 13th in the pole vault at 14-10 as the Tritons ended Day 3 of the four-day meet in third place with 21 points. Lincoln University is first with 27 points.
For the women, UCSD senior Denise McFayden was second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9 minutes 59.84 seconds.
The Triton’s 4x100 relay team of Yvette Marzulo, Erica Washington, Renee Sproul and Michelle Milledge finished fourth with a school-record time of 47.79.
UCSD is 10th with 13 points, 14 behind leader Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
