VALENCIA : Accord Signed for 40 Acres of Parks

An agreement between Los Angeles County and a private builder will result in creation of 40 acres of parkland and trails over the next 10 years in and around a 8,362-unit Valencia development known as North River.

The County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the agreement with Newhall Land & Farming Co. on Tuesday after concerns raised by Supervisor Gloria Molina about part of the park being private were addressed.

Parks director Rodney Cooper said about 10 acres would provide neighborhood recreation centers and parks that would be used by future North River residents, leaving the county to concentrate on providing larger, regional parks on about 30 donated acres.

As part of the agreement, the county will receive $2.2 million from the developer, which Cooper said would pay for basic landscaping and irrigation of about 22 acres.
