South Gate : Project Will Synchronize Traffic Signals on Firestone
Traffic signals will be upgraded and synchronized on a mile-and-a-half stretch of Firestone Boulevard that carries 55,000 cars a day, South Gate officials announced.
Work on the $650,000 project began this week and is expected to take five months to complete. Construction, which will be done in sections, will go from Rayo Avenue west to Santa Fe Avenue.
Some of the 11 traffic signals will be revamped and others will be replaced. All will be connected by a uniform wiring system so they can be timed and synchronized on a single computer system.
Motorists maintaining a speed of 35 m.p.h. on Firestone should be able to drive without hitting a red light during normal traffic conditions, according to the city.
While wiring for the new system is installed, only one traffic lane will be open between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday on eastbound Firestone. Street parking will be prohibited.
