The UC Irvine men’s golf team, buoyed by two rounds in the 60s Wednesday, didn’t break par at the NCAA championships Thursday and failed to make the second-round cut.
But William Yanagisawa, a sophomore who plays No. 1 for the Anteaters, shot a 76 after opening with a 68 to advance as an individual.
Arizona State’s Phil Mickelson shot a seven-under-par 65. Added to his opening-round 63, which tied an NCAA tournament record, Mickelson’s round put him 16 under after 36 holes on the University of New Mexico’s Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
The 16-under total broke by five strokes the previous 36-hole record shared by John Inman of North Carolina in 1984 and Tom Kite of Texas in 1972.
Irvine freshman Steve Holmes, who was tied for second place after shooting a career-low 67 Wednesday, shot 81 Thursday.
Senior Lyle Archer led Irvine with a second-round 74, but senior Joey Sugar (81) and junior Adam Horodyski (80) failed to break 80 for the second day.
Irvine’s 36-hole score of 606 failed to qualify the team for the final two rounds. The team needed a 585 to advance.
Arizona State held a six-shot lead over Arizona in the team competition.
Mickelson, a two-time champion, had no intention of letting up in the second round.
“If you lose the fear (of playing poorly), you lose the edge,” he said.
For the second consecutive day, Mickelson had seven birdies and an eagle, but bogeyed the par-four third hole and par-three 12th.
Texas Christian senior Charlie Stevens and Oklahoma sophomore Patrick Lee were 10 shots back at 138. Stevens had consecutive 69s, while Lee’s 67 was the second-best round of the day.
Defending individual champion Warren Schutte of Nevada Las Vegas had a second-round 75 and was 17 shots behind Mickelson.
