Substitute drivers moved into starring roles as Teo Fabi took the provisional pole for Sunday’s Detroit Grand Prix, with Raul Boesel and Paul Tracy close behind.
Fabi, driving in place of injured Mario Andretti, took the top qualifying spot from Boesel, driving for injured Hiro Matsushita, on the final lap around the 2.1-mile, 14-turn circuit on Belle Isle in the Detroit River, two miles from downtown.
