NOTHING CHEESY: Greg Patton, who resigned Monday as UC Irvine’s men’s tennis coach (C1), left a solid 288-150 record after 13 years, and relished the competition. During this spring’s spirited but unsuccessful drive for the NCAA playoffs, Patton said: “This is what it’s all about. It’s like taking your girlfriend out to dinner and there’s wine and candles and you’ve got a ring. It means something. It’s not like going to McDonald’s or Chuck E Cheese.” . . . Patton is taking over a similar job at Boise State.
