TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe to Get Grass Test From Stich in Netherlands

John McEnroe defeated Alexander Volkov, 6-4, 6-3, on Friday and advanced to the semifinals of the Continental Grass Court Championships at Rosmalen, the Netherlands.

McEnroe, preparing for Wimbledon, had four aces. Volkov double-faulted nine times.

McEnroe will face top-seeded Michael Stich, who advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Richey Reneberg.

Another American, John Stark, outlasted Henrik Holm of Sweden, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3. Second-seeded Richard Krajicek was an upset victim, losing to fellow Dutchman Michiel Schapers, 6-4, 6-2.

Second-seeded Pete Sampras was upset by fellow American Brad Gilbert, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the Queen’s Club tournament at London.

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg came within three points of losing, but rallied to beat Australian Pat Cash, 6-7 (9-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

“It was a tough match and a lot of hard work,” said a relieved Edberg, who beat Cash, 6-3, 6-3, at the same stage of the tournament last year. “He played a lot better than he did last year.”

In other quarterfinal matches, Shuzo Matsuokoa defeated Guillaume Roaux, 6-4, 3-6, 9-7, and Wayne Ferreira downed Jason Stoltenberg, 6-4, 6-2.

Pam Shriver won a battle of the former champions at Birmingham, England, defeating top-seeded Zina Garrison, 7-5, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the grass-court tournament.

The victory by Shriver, seeded seventh, put her in the semifinals against Brenda Schultz of the Netherlands.

Schultz, the highest seeded player left in the tournament at No. 6, defeated ninth-seeded Larisa Savchenko-Neiland of Latvia, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6).

Fourth-seeded Lori McNeil was upset by Jenny Byrne, 6-2, 6-4. Britain’s Jo Durie completed the semifinal field by ousting unseeded Andrea Temesvari, 6-3, 6-2.

Top-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria and third-seeded Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden advanced to the semifinals of the $250,000 City of Florence tournament in Italy.

Muster defeated Luiz Mattar of Brazil, 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, and Gustafsson eliminated Francisco Yunis of Argentina 6-1, 6-3.

Italy’s Renzo Furlan and Uruguay’s Marcelo Filippini also advanced to the semifinals. Furlan beat Franco Davin of Argentina, 6-2, 6-4, and Filippini defeated eighth-seeded Fabrice Santoro of France, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
