Tijuana’s Martinez Featured in Main Sports Arena Bout

Tijuana boxer Makito Martinez and Juan Akita of Manzanilla, Mexico, will be featured in the main event of the NABF superflyweight title June 25 at the Sports Arena.

Junior bantamweight Martinez (21-4) has 18 consecutive knockouts. Akita (15-5-1) fought to a draw in his last bout. The fight is scheduled for 10 rounds.

The undercard features junior welterweight David Santos (15-2) of San Francisco, lightweight Didier Hughes (5-0) of San Diego, featherweight Jose Luis Noyola of Mexico and middleweight Rodney Toney of San Diego.

BASKETBALL

Torrey Pines High Coach John Farrell has been selected to coach at the Nike All-Star camp in Indianapolis, July 5-12.

Farrell is one of 10 coaches nationally to be selected for the camp, which includes 100 of the top juniors in the nation, among them Scot Pollard, Torrey Pines’ 6-11 center.

Bill Bobier, Torrey Pines assistant, will accompany Farrell to the camp.

SWIMMING

Dennis Moore, who guided Poway to six San Diego Section team championships in seven years, has resigned as coach of the girls’ program. Moore coached the girls seven years and the boys five. He won four girls and two boys titles.
