Stereotyping Black Males
I almost fainted. The plight of the young black male (“Stereotype That Won’t Go Away,” Column One, May 31) made it to the front page of The Times!
Where were you guys before Rodney King and where were you guys before the Los Angeles riots? I find it fascinating that now after the riots and after the videotape you want to do all these “in-depth” pieces on black people, black neighborhoods, and of course, the endangered species, black men.
The media coverage of the black male in this county is pathetic to begin with. Unless we’re singing, dancing, rapping or playing basketball, you can’t deal with us as men.
I walk the streets in handmade African robes, and women still clutch their purses. As if I really want the little tacky things!
No, we don’t all look alike, and no, half of us are not gang members. I would hope all white men at major metropolitan newspapers are not racist.
