Stanley Smith led second-day qualifying for the Miller Genuine Draft 400 at Brooklyn, Mich. Smith, from Chelsea, Ala., drove his Chevrolet Lumina on a fast lap of 174.165 m.p.h., a trip around the two-mile, high-banked oval that would have been good enough for sixth on the 41-car starting grid if he had done it Friday in the first round of time trials.
