BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Suspensions for McGriff and Wilson
Fred McGriff of the San Diego Padres and pitcher Trevor Wilson of the San Francisco Giants were suspended for four days and fined an undisclosed amount by National League president Bill White on Tuesday for their roles in a bench-clearing incident at San Francisco last week.
McGriff charged the mound when Wilson hit him with a pitch after a grand slam by Gary Sheffield.
The incident triggered a brawl among the players from both clubs.
Wilson appealed the fine and suspension and will continue to play pending a hearing. McGriff’s suspension began with Tuesday’s game.
Barry Bonds, still not fully recovered from the strained rib cage muscle that has sidelined him for eight games, was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The move was retroactive to June 15, meaning that Bonds can be reactivated as early as next Tuesday, when the Pirates play at St. Louis.
Bonds’ recovery has been quicker than expected, but Manager Jim Leyland said there is no reason to rush him back into the lineup.
