Castro and Padilla Head Six-Bout Card at Irvine Marriott
Jose Castro of Fountain Valley, the International Boxing Council lightweight champion, takes on Zack Padilla in a non-title bout tonight in the main event of the monthly boxing program at the Irvine Marriott.
Castro, 17-2-1 with 11 knockouts, is coming off an impressive performance in his last bout. Castro, 24, scored a third-round knockout of Felipe Fuentes at the Forum. Fuentes said he planned to retire after the loss.
Padilla, 29, from Azusa, is 12-1 with eight knockouts.
The first of six scheduled bouts starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets--priced at $32, $27 and $22--go on sale today at 10 a.m. at the hotel.
The UC Irvine Bren Center will be host to seven free-sparing bouts between Russian and American athletes starting at 7 p.m. Saturday. Free sparing combines elements of boxing, karate, judo, kung fu and wrestling.
Ticket prices are from $20 to $100, and part of the money goes toward Family Help Line, a nonprofit counseling service for local needy families.
