1,000 Entered in Sunday’s International Triathlon

The ninth annual Port of San Diego International Triathlon begins Sunday with a one-kilometer swim at Spanish Landing at 7 a.m.

The swim will be followed by an 18-kilometer bicycle ride to Cabrillo Monument. The race will conclude with a 10-kilometer run along the bay finishing at Embarcadaro Marina Park.

Russian triathlete Alex Rukosuev and Michelle Gones of Australia lead the profesional field competing for $10,000 in prize money. Over 1,000 triathletes are entered.

GOLF

In second-day action at the 16th U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championships, both Elizabeth Bowman of Bonita and Susan Pankau of San Diego beat their morning-round opponents to advance to the afternoon session where they faced each other.

Bowman then defeated Pankau, 1 up.

Earlier in the day, Bowman got by Alycya Rambin of Tulsa, Okla., 5 and 3; and Pankau defeated Lori Elliott of Sparks, Nev., 3 and 2.

The tournament is being held at the 5,875-yard, par-71 Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento.

Among the other six golfers who will advance to today’s third round is Amy Fruhwirth, the 1991 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion. Fruhwirth defeated Tina Becker-Furey, of Flint, Mich., 4 and 3 during the morning round before beating Marla Jemsek, of Burr Ridge, Ill., 7 and 6 in the afternoon.

The championship concludes Sunday with the semifinal and final rounds.
