LOCAL NOTES : Warady Wins Another Stage of Race Across U.S.

David Warady of Huntington Beach won his second consecutive stage of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace, completing the 47.55 miles between Kelso, Calif., and Stateline, Nev., in 7 hours 53 minutes 23 seconds Friday.

Warady, who began the day in fourth place, 2:25.45 behind leader Al Howie of Scotland, moved to third, 1:53.40 behind. Helmut Schieke of Germany is second, 32.24 behind Howie.

The 64-day, 3,000-mile race continues today with a 35.5-mile stage from Stateline to Las Vegas.

Ron Prettyman, athletic director at Southern California College, has been named athletic director/administrator of the year for NAIA District III in a vote of district administrators. Prettyman becomes eligible to be named national athletic director/administrator of the year. That award will be given in September.

Mike Briggs, a former Corona del Mar High and UC Irvine player, teamed with Michelle Jaggard-Lai of Australia for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, victory over Menno Oosting and Nicole Muns-Jagerman of the Netherlands in a first-round mixed doubles match at Wimbledon.

Doug Eisenman, a former Foothill High standout, and partner Mark Knowles lost a second-round men’s doubles match to Neil Borwick and Simon Youl of Australia, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-3.

Debbie Graham of Fountain Valley and Ginger Helgeson were tied in the first-round women’s doubles match against 15th seeded Katerina Maleeva and Barbara Rittner. Graham and Helgeson took the first set, 6-4, and lost the second, 6-7 (7-4), before the match was called because of darkness.
