BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Joyner Signs Extension With Royals

The Kansas City Royals signed first baseman Wally Joyner to a multiyear contract extension Friday that will keep him with the club into the middle of the decade.

Joyner, who was to be a free agent after the 1992 season, signed a contract through the 1995 season with an option for 1996. Joyner is guaranteed more than $14 million.

Joyner, 30, joined the Royals as a free agent last December after spending the first six years of his major league career with the Angels. He entered this season with a lifetime batting average of .288. He is batting .284 with five homers and 29 RBIs in 62 games with the Royals.

“I am obviously very happy,” Joyner said. “When I signed the one-year contract last winter, I hoped we would be able to work out a long-term arrangement. Once I got to Kansas City and started playing, it only increased my desire to stay with the Royals. My family and I very much enjoy the organization and the community.”

Pitcher Trevor Wilson of the San Francisco Giants withdrew his appeal of a four-day suspension and fine on Friday and began serving the punishment.

National League President Bill White imposed the penalties on Wilson and Fred McGriff of the San Diego Padres on Tuesday for their altercation that triggered a bench-clearing brawl the previous week.
