Services Set for Civic Leader, Arbitrator Lawrence P. Casey

Lawrence P. Casey, an Orange County Superior Court arbitrator who served as president of the Strawberry Festival and other Garden Grove civic groups, has died at age 73.

Casey died of cardiac arrest at a Newport Beach convalescent hospital on June 12. He was also president of the the Garden Grove Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Boys’ Club.

He practiced law in Garden Grove from 1960 to 1977 and in Newport Beach from 1979 to 1986, when he was named an arbitrator for the Superior Court. He served in that post until last month.

Casey, who had lived in Newport Beach for about 10 years, held degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Law School. He was a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps during World War II and saw action in the Pacific Theater, a family member said Friday. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served as the base legal officer at Camp Pendleton.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel, of Newport Beach; sons Lawrence of Dallas, Steven of Huntington Beach, Mathew of Newport Beach and David of Atlanta, and by two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 600 St. Andrews Road, Newport Beach.
