ANIMAL QUAKERS: Pets felt Sunday’s earthquakes too, and some of them left home. . . . “We’re getting an unusual number of people calling and saying their pets are missing and twice the number of lost reports for cats,” said Judy Maitlen of Orange County Animal Control. But do animals predict the quakes with strange behavior? “Dogs howled during the quake, but we’ve never seen any sign that they act differently before an earthquake,” she said. . . . Added San Juan Capistrano veterinarian Kenneth R. Kalthoff: “Pets, especially birds, get scared, but I don’t know of any pets acting strange before earthquakes.”
