The California Highway Patrol said Monday it is investigating an accident in which four people, including three members of a Huntington Beach family, were killed and six people suffered major injuries near Barstow over the weekend.

Laurie Haynes, 36, Katharine Haynes, 15, and Thomas Haynes, 13, were killed instantly when being ejected from the GMC Suburban they were riding in. The accident occurred Saturday shortly before 3 p.m. on Interstate 15 about 25 miles east of Barstow, the CHP said.

The driver of the vehicle, Michael C. Haynes, 39, of Huntington Beach, was taken to San Bernardino County Hospital with major injuries, CHP Officer Tim Larson said.

Also killed was Nina Motupalli, 18, of Diamond Bar, Larson said. She was a passenger in a second vehicle involved in the crash.

The accident occurred after Haynes changed lanes while driving south on Interstate 15, the CHP said. Haynes’ vehicle made “light contact” with a car driven by Jennifer L. Gast, 18, of Diamond Bar, Larson said.

Both vehicles spun out of control and rolled over several times before coming to a stop on either side of the freeway, the CHP said.
