The public recently became aware that the chief executive of the National United Way was receiving an exorbitant salary. Naturally this led to a reluctance on the part of donors to continue their support.
It’s tragic that this reluctance has affected numerous other nonprofit organizations, many of which have no United Way affiliation.
To make matters worse, this drop in support has come at a time when nonprofit organizations are confronting recession-related problems. The recession has created a double-barreled burden: The number of poor and disadvantaged has increased while the dollars required to assist them have dwindled.
North San Diego County has a nonprofit social and health service network of over 100 organizations. This network shares information and attempts to collectively assist people in need.
The salaries of executive directors of nonprofit corporations are set by a volunteer board of directors. Meetings are always open to the public. Anyone interested or concerned is welcome--indeed urged--to attend board meetings.
Most nonprofit organizations have an independent audit conducted each year. This information is usually distributed in the form of an annual report, and is available to the general public.
