SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Mark Heurung of Ventura finally broke free from almost two years of frustration to win the 20-lap Street Stock oval main event before 1,380 at Ventura Raceway on Saturday night.

Paul Moore of Oxnard, the current season points leader, had the pole and the lead through Lap 12 when a yellow flag came out. On the re-start, Heurung powered inside of Moore and pulled away from the pack to win by three car lengths over Bill Bartels of Culver City.

Heurung broke a winless main-event streak that dated to the 1990 season.

James Weston of Santa Barbara was third and Tom Stephens of Ventura was fourth. Moore experienced mechanical problems after the re-start and dropped out of the race on Lap 14.

Gary Hubert of Camarillo is beginning to feel at home in the winner’s circle as he won the Mini Stock 20-lap oval main event for the second consecutive week.

Tim Gill of Somis pressured Hubert the entire race and finished second. Gary Curtis of Camarillo, who returned to the Ventura track after nearly a two-year absence was third, and Joe Silva of Port Hueneme was fourth. Mike Wright of San Diego used the pole position to record a flag-to-flag victory in the 20-lap IMCA Modified main event.
