The Santa Paula City Council on Monday approved a $204,104 contract with Brandt Construction of Moorpark to improve the efficiency of the city’s sewage treatment plant.

At the same time, the council authorized the Ventura Regional Sanitation District and Kennedy/Jenks Consultants to oversee the project and provide engineering services.

Brandt Construction, which submitted the lowest of five bids received by the city, will install a second pump at the facility located at the end of Peck Road, said Norman Wilkinson, the city’s public works director.

The installation of a secondary recirculation system will help increase the efficiency of bio-filters at the plant, which processes 2 million gallons of sewage a day, Wilkinson said.

The improvements are needed because the single existing pump could not provide an optimum flow rate to both the primary settling tanks and secondary bio-filters, he said.
