OXNARD : School Board Head Will Step Down
Jean Harris, president of the Oxnard School District’s board of trustees, has announced that she will not seek reelection in the fall after serving on the board for nine years.
At the board’s meeting Wednesday, Harris told her fellow board members that she would step down to devote more time to personal matters, but would remain active in school affairs.
Trustee Charles Johnson has said that he would seek reelection to a third term on the board that governs the 12,500-student elementary school district.
In an interview, Harris said she wanted to make the announcement with plenty of time left before the Aug. 7 filing deadline. “I wanted to announce in time so any possible candidate would have a full month to consider running or not.”
A former teacher and educational consultant who started working for the district in 1977, Harris was the first educator to serve on the board in 20 years when she was first elected in 1983.
Harris said she was most proud of developing the district’s program for gifted students. She also took a special interest in bilingual education.
