David Peoples bogeyed three of his last five holes but won the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic on Sunday at Williamsburg, Va., when Ed Dougherty missed a five-foot birdie putt on the final hole.

“That never happens,” Peoples said. “The play is just so good out here. You have to win tournaments. Very seldom will you see someone bogey the last two holes and still win.”

Dougherty, who began the day one shot ahead of Peoples, had two birdies and two bogeys. The last bogey came on the 177-yard 17th, where he and Peoples missed the green with their tee shots, chipped poorly and two-putted for fours.

Peoples took a two-shot lead over Dougherty to the 438-yard 18th hole, but hooked his drive onto a hilly lie in the rough down the left side of the fairway. Peoples’ second shot was short of the green. He chipped to 10 feet but missed the par putt.

Dougherty drove to the center of the fairway and put his approach pin-high, five feet to the right of the hole. But his birdie effort missed.

Betsy King won a four-way playoff when she rolled in an eight-foot putt on the first extra hole in the rain-delayed LPGA Phar-Mor in Youngstown, Ohio.

The victory, worth $75,000, was King’s second this year and 27th of her career.

King finished 54 holes at seven-under-par 209, tied with Meg Mallon, Beth Daniel and Donna Andrews. Mallon was eight-under going into the 18th hole but bogeyed after hitting her tee shot into the rough behind the hole.

Mallon would have won $275,000 had she made par on the final hole of regulation, because she was also leading in competition for a $200,000 bonus offered to the top combined finisher in two Phar-Mor tournaments this year. Instead, she won $100,000, with the $200,000 prize going to Pat Bradley.

Greg Norman of Australia knocked in an eight-foot birdie putt worth $360,000 on the 16th hole at Sotogrande, Spain, and emerged as the big winner over Jose Maria Olazabal, Fred Couples, Ian-Baker Finch and Ian Woosnam in the second European Skins Game.
