Calcavecchias Lose Jewelry in Burglary
Mark Calcavecchia, the 1989 British Open champion, and his wife, Sheryl, were robbed Thursday of jewelry worth about $50,000.
The theft was discovered by the Calcavecchias when they returned to their hotel, the Marine at North Berwick, where many of the players are staying for the tournament.
Most of the jewelry was insured, but one piece--an emerald ring given to Sheryl by her stepfather--was not.
“It’s my own fault,” Sheryl said. “I’ve learned my lesson. We should have taken precautions.”
Calcavecchia said the theft didn’t affect his play Friday. He shot a par 71 and is at 141 for 36 holes, two under.
“But Sheryl is upset,” Calcavecchia said. “Some of the things had sentimental value for her. At least, there is one bright side. I made the cut this year.”
