From Staff and Wire Reports

Davey Allison suffered a broken collarbone and broken bones in his right arm and right wrist Sunday when his car flipped 11 times during the Miller Genuine Draft 500 at Pocono International Raceway at Long Pond, Pa.

Allison, 31, who had led 115 laps after starting on the pole, was running fourth on lap 150 when his car was tapped in the left rear by Darrell Waltrip’s car coming out of the second turn.

Allison’s Ford, running on the inside part of the track, slid sideways into the grass infield, turned back forward, bounced and became airborne before flipping. The car eventually jumped a guardrail and came to rest 75 feet from infield fans. Waltrip said he was attempting to pass Allison on the inside of the track’s shortest straightaway.

“We just barely touched,” said Waltrip, who won the race 49 laps after the accident. “I could not conceive of him trying to cut in front of me. When we came back around, I was sick to my stomach.”

Ambulance crews pulled Allison from the wreckage about 10 minutes after the crash. They said Allison was conscious and able to get on his feet in the infield hospital. Waltrip’s Chevrolet edged Harry Gant’s Oldsmobile by 1.31 seconds for his 82nd career victory and first since June of 1991, also at Pocono. He averaged 134.058 m.p.h.
