Weekend Box Office : ‘Honey’ in a League of Its Own

Share

Who’s in first? Not the baseball comedy “A League of Their Own.” After only one week at the top of the box-office standings, the Penny Marshall film dropped to second place with the arrival of Disney’s comedy “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid,” the much-anticipated sequel to 1989’s big-grossing “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.” But while the $11 million grossed by “Honey” was enough to boost it to No. 1, the figure was softer than some in the industry had projected.

Meanwhile, ticket sales for all movies appeared to be slowing after the hefty pace of previous weeks. Eddie Murphy’s “Boomerang” and the action-oriented “Universal Soldier” both dropped.

“Sister Act,” now in its eighth week, is nearing $100 million.

* The $30-million romantic comedy starring Jack Nicholson, which opened amid tales of production trouble, lived up to the poor expectations. It grossed a dull $2.03 million.
