SATICOY : Brush Fire Briefly Threatens Homes
A fire in Saticoy Wednesday burned two acres of brush and briefly threatened a housing complex before it was controlled, authorities said.
The fire broke out in the brush-choked riverbed of the Santa Clara River near Saticoy Avenue around 1:20 p.m., said Dennis Miller, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.
As the slow-moving flames neared the cooperatively owned Cabrillo Village, county and city fire crews set a backfire at the boundary of the apartment complex to protect it, he said.
After establishing a line around the fire, the crews allowed the flames to consume the remaining brush inside the perimeter to reduce the fire hazard the thick brush posed for the area, Miller said.
Ventura city firefighters declared the fire out at 3:30 p.m., but a county fire crew remained on the scene to prevent flare-ups, he said.
The fire may have been caused by children playing in the area, officials said.
