An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer was shot and killed late Thursday near downtown Los Angeles after apparently arguing with a motorist on a Santa Monica Freeway off-ramp, authorities said.

The slain officer, whose identity was not immediately released, was shot in the chest about 9:35 p.m. on the Pico Boulevard off-ramp near the Los Angeles Convention Center, LAPD officer Terri Shoats said.

Police said the CHP officer apparently had gotten out of his car to approach a pickup truck that was believed to have been following him when the shooting took place.

Authorities said another off-duty CHP officer was with the officer when he was shot. She drove the wounded officer to nearby California Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators were seeking two suspects in their 30s, who were seen in a blue pickup truck with a white camper shell.

Police said the driver of the truck apparently followed the officer’s car for several miles on the Pomona and Santa Monica freeways. When the officer stopped his car on the off-ramp, the truck also stopped.
