PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Facing Old Team, Lewis Is Injured

Share

Former Raider cornerback Garry Lewis, recently traded to Dallas, couldn’t wait to tackle his former team. And it cost him a broken bone Thursday as the joint Raider-Cowboy workouts wound up at Austin, Tex.

In Lewis’ first practice of the summer--he was a holdout until Wednesday--he broke the index finger of his right hand while making a tackle. The injury won’t keep him out of practice, but Lewis will wear a cast over his wrist and finger for at least two weeks.

“I don’t like the Raiders now,” said Lewis, a third-year pro from Alcorn State. “I probably was trying too hard, though.”

Raider Coach Art Shell got his wish Thursday. After two days of rain and cool weather, the temperature soared into the 90s and humidity made the practice sessions stifling.

“With heat like this, it gets you in shape in a hurry,” Shell said. “But you’ve got to be smart about it. You don’t want to kill them out here. Times have changed since I was a player. We didn’t have water, and we’d just work our butts off.”

Former UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman had a particularly good morning session against the Raiders. He threw two consecutive 65-yard touchdown passes, both against rookie Raider safety Derrick Hoskins. Hoskins later got into a scuffle with Dallas wide receiver Derrick Shepard. They were separated by Raider safety Ronnie Lott. . . . No Raider had more fun than veteran tackle Bob Golic, who led more than 4,000 fans in cheers after practice. Hundreds of fans behind chain-link fences screamed and begged for Golic’s signature and Golic obliged, signing as many autographs as he could, but it was impossible to sign for everyone, so Golic signed only for those who made the most noise.

An estimated 23,000 fans attended the three days of practice at St. Edward’s University. . . . The Raiders will be traveling against next week, to Flagstaff, Ariz., for joint workouts with the Phoenix Cardinals.
