29 Graduate as Reading Tutors

Huntington Beach Library’s Adult Literacy Services has reported the graduation of 29 basic-reading tutors from the Literacy Volunteers of America tutor-training workshop.

The graduates are: Joe Appolito, Heidi Bader, Fran Buzinski, Susan Haney, Hope Harrelson, Crystal Colwell, Bobbie Demers, Bernice Garrett, Robert Guffey, Raquel Hermon-Schmilovich, Evelyn Huang, Dana King, Sandy Lancaster, Janet Larrucea, Mabel Maxwell, Pat Norton, Jean Olson, Donita Parada, Gina Peralta, Maryann Price, Marian Rijkeboer, Jenny Rostron, Vel Straub and Karen Woo, all from Huntington Beach.

Others are: Ole Metwally, Fountain Valley; Carrie Walker, Costa Mesa; Vicki Robinson, Newport Beach; Bernardo Contreras, Santa Ana, and Bud Rorman, Dana Point.

Huntington Beach Library provides free, private and confidential tutoring services to adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing and spelling skills.

Orange resident Glen Morris, 27, an Orange Coast College sophomore and art major, has been accepted to attend the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Morris, who also acts as a high school recruiter for OCC, studied graphic design after he completed his stint in the U.S. Army, much of it in Germany.

Robert Scantlebury of Fullerton, a community services officer for public safety, and Ed Sanders of Huntington Beach, a warehouse coordinator, have been named Cal Staff Fullerton’s 1992 Outstanding Staff Employees.

Fullerton resident Jeanie Herbert, manager of employee and financial communications for Beckman Instruments in Fullerton, has been selected as Communicator of the Year by the Orange County chapter of the International Assn. of Business Communicators.

Herbert, a 10-year employee, is responsible for internal communications for the company’s 8,000 employees and retirees worldwide as well as production of the company’s annual and quarterly reports to shareholders.

Costa Mesa resident JoAn Ashley, president of Tidy Tire Kit Inc. in Costa Mesa, has been named Saleswoman of the Year by the Orange County chapter of Women in Sales.

Leah and Jack Pariser of Laguna Beach, will be honored Aug. 2 at the Irvine Marriott hotel by the Orange County Anti-Defamation League’s Society of Fellows for their longtime support of the group.

The couple are members of the league’s regional board and are active members of the group’s civil rights committee.

The Business Women Assn.’s Horizons Unlimited chapter in Fullerton has presented scholarships to Shawn Birney of Hemet, who is attending Western State University College of Law; Jo Ann Quak of Santa Ana, attending Chapman University, and Gina Wald of Long Beach, attending Los Angeles Chiropractic College.

The trio’s awards were part of $3 million in scholarships presented by the group’s 2,100 chapters in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Over the past 14 years the Fullerton chapter has presented $50,000 in financial support.

Seven north Orange County women who have been active in sororities and campus living while also maintaining excellent grade-point averages have received $500 each for their college expenses next semester from the North Orange County Panhellenic Assn.

The recipients are: Lisa Saxton, UC Riverside, Kappa Kappa Gamma; Kimberly Haerens, Cal State Fullerton, Gamma Phi Beta; Annemarie Mangold, UC Riverside, Sigma Kappa; Alicia Mew, UCLA, Kappa Delta; Yvette Ortega, UC Berkeley, Alpha Chi Omega; Angela Pierce, UC Riverside, Pi Beta Phi, and Siri Thomas, Cal State Fullerton, Alpha Chi Omega.

Janelle Milne, 7, a student at Turtle Rock Elementary School in Irvine and daughter of Michelle Menet of Irvine, recently won the title of Miss Junior Pre-Teen San Diego 1992 at Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego.

Janelle’s selection qualified her to compete Jan. 2, 1993, in the Cities of America 1993 National Title contest in Orlando, Fla.
