PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell Pleased With Progress

Share

After returning to Oxnard from a three-day practice session against the Dallas Cowboys in Austin, Tex., Coach Art Shell gave the Raiders Friday off. They will resume drills this morning, then will have Family Day, a public practice, at Oxnard High this afternoon.

The Raiders will be off Sunday, with drills resuming Monday. They depart Wednesday for a three-day joint camp with the Phoenix Cardinals at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Shell was pleased with the work against Dallas.

“We got a lot accomplished,” he said. “We got to work on the pace of the game. When you work like that, the pace picks up and you get close to game conditions. And we got a chance to work against different formations.

“It was very important for our young guys to get the work and I think they got a lot of work.

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do. I know that’s the old cliche, but we have to continue to work on our passing game and get better. I think our offensive line needs to come into form.”

Defensive end Greg Townsend has dismissed agent Joshua Luchs and is now represented by Neil Allen, who previously represented Townsend.

Apparently unhappy with a five-year contract extension that Luchs negotiated for him last year, Townsend has failed to report to training camp in an effort to have his contract renegotiated.

Six other Raiders are also absent from training camp.

Running back Marcus Allen, wide receiver Tim Brown, cornerbacks Lionel Washington and Terry McDaniel and linebacker Winston Moss are involved in contract disputes.

Defensive end Scott Davis, who signed a new contract last year, also has failed to report.
