A cluster of highly destructive Mediterranean fruit flies has been discovered in a San Jose residential area, state agriculture officials announced Thursday.

The seven Medflies--six in a trap set in a plum tree and the seventh in a peach tree about 200 yards away--were found about 15 miles from where an infestation was eradicated in 1990, said Department of Food and Agriculture supervisor John Connell.

Ground bait applications began Wednesday in the area where the fruit flies were found, and residents were asked not to move their fruit. Officials will be stripping some trees of fruit to eliminate the host material in which the fruit fly lays its eggs.
