Dukes Can Take First Step to Title Tonight

Share

The Dukes can take the first of the steps they need to become the first Orange County professional team to win a division championship since the 1986 Angels when they play host to the Los Angeles Strings at 7 tonight at the John Wayne Tennis Club.

A sweep of their final three matches will assure the Dukes (8-3) of World TeamTennis’ West Division title. The Dukes have won a franchise-record seven consecutive matches and will conclude the regular season with matches at Phoenix Saturday and Wichita Sunday.

The Dukes lead the Vail Eagles (8-4) and Sacramento Capitals (8-4) by a half-match. If the teams end the regular season tied, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, followed by total games won. The final tiebreaker is games won in matches between the tied teams.

The Dukes won four of five sets, with Jimmy Connors’ 6-5 (5-1) victory over Rikard Bergh accounting for the Strings’ only triumph.
