Montana Cuts Short Another Workout
Joe Montana’s comeback sustained another setback Saturday when he again cut a workout short because of persistent fatigue and soreness in the area of his surgically repaired passing elbow.
“There was no change, so I just quit throwing,” Montana said after practice at the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp.
Montana, who sat out last season because of a torn right elbow tendon, rested his passing arm for four days before trying to throw again.
But he had the elbow wrapped in an ice-soaked bandage after only 21 throws, all 20 yards or less.
Asked if he was discouraged, Montana said: “Naw. I kind of figured it would be the same. They just wanted me to test it.”
Coach George Seifert said Montana will not play in Monday night’s exhibition opener against the Denver Broncos. Steve Young will start with Steve Bono and Bill Musgrave also expected to play.
Neither Montana nor Seifert could say when Montana will resume his throwing regimen. That will be decided after another consultation with team physician Michael Dillingham, who reattached Montana’s elbow tendon during surgery last October.
