PRO FOOTBALL: DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : A Fighting Weekend in Flagstaff

The Raiders’ weekend in Flagstaff, Ariz., ended the way it started--with a brawl.

Before the Raiders and Phoenix Cardinals left the field Saturday, Cardinal defensive end Mike Jones twice swung his helmet at Raider rookie offensive tackle Greg Skrepenak.

Jones said he was just defending himself. “He (Skrepenak) just happened to throw a blow and hit me in the face,” Jones said. “I flipped.”

The Raiders left Northern Arizona University’s Walkup Skydome without talking to reporters.

But Coach Art Shell made it clear he was not happy with the joint workouts, which began Thursday. “It was not very good,” Shell said.

Rain forced the teams indoors for all but one practice session and fights interrupted each workout.

In Saturday’s scrimmage, the Raiders’ first seven passing attempts were unsuccessful. Five went incomplete and the other two ended in sacks by Jones. Starting quarterback Jay Schroeder, who was booed by the sellout crowd of 14,738, completed three of five passes for 32 yards. Backup Todd Marinovich was two of four for 38.

Offensive guard Max Montoya suffered a bruised shoulder injury in the first series.
