Share

The Raiders signed defensive back Darrel Hopper and cut wide receiver Mike Reddick.

Hopper, from USC, has previous pro experience with the San Diego Chargers as well as Ottawa of the Canadian Football League. Hopper, who spent three years with Ottawa, got a tryout with the Raiders last season as a wide receiver, but was cut before the regular season.

With cornerbacks Terry McDaniel and Lionel Washington holding out, the 28-year-old Hopper got another shot.

“You never can tell,” said Hopper, 6-1 and 205 pounds. “With guys holding out or injured, you just sit back and do what you can do. I’m not counting on anything, but I know I can play.”

Guard Tom Roth, who left camp Tuesday because of an accelerated heartbeat, was feeling a lot better Wednesday and might return to camp today. . . . Tackle Bruce Wilkerson, bothered by a sore shoulder, went through a limited practice, but is expected to be ready for Saturday’s exhibition opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

Coach Art Shell plans on splitting Saturday’s game between quarterbacks Jay Schroeder and Todd Marinovich.

Third-string quarterback Vince Evans might also get in some work, depending on how things go.
