The New York Mets, hurting for hitting while Bobby Bonilla and Howard Johnson are on the disabled list, acquired outfielder Kevin Bass from the San Francisco Giants for a player to be named. Bass, 33, is batting .268 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs. He is in his 10th season in the majors with a .269 average with 102 home runs for Houston and the Giants. Bass is a free agent after this season. . . . Pitcher Curt Young (3-0) was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Yankees. . . . The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Sammy Sosa on the 15-day disabled list with a broken ankle and purchased the contract of infielder-outfielder Jeff Kunkel from triple-A Iowa of the American Assn.
