Kyle Petty outraced Ernie Irvan to win the rain-shortened Bud at the Glen NASCAR stock car race at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

The start of the race was delayed by rain and a wet track for 3 hours 20 minutes, and the scheduled 90-lap event went only 51 on the 2.45-mile, 11-turn circuit.

Petty led 19 of those laps, including the final seven, to earn his first road-racing victory and the fifth victory of his Winston Cup career. The race was red-flagged after five laps of caution in a light but steady rain.

NASCAR officials called the race complete because there was not enough time to dry the track before darkness after it was red-flagged.

Petty averaged 85.790 m.p.h. as he won first-place money of $50,895 before a record Watkins Glen crowd estimated at 130,000.
