Former UCLA standout Todd Zeile, once considered among the best young hitters in baseball, was optioned to the Cardinals’ triple-A team at Louisville and replaced on the roster by Louisville third baseman Tracy Woodson. . . . The Philadelphia Phillies traded infielder Dale Sveum to the Chicago White Sox for minor-league pitcher Keith Shepherd. . . . Mike LaCoss, released 13 months ago by the San Francisco Giants, will begin pitching this week with the Montreal Expos’ top farm team in an effort to return to the majors before the season is over. LaCoss, 36, has been out of baseball since being released by San Francisco on July 3, 1991. . . . Pitcher Don Robinson, waived by Philadelphia last month after an injury-plagued season, said he is considering a comeback next season.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago has set Sept. 30 as the date for oral arguments on Commissioner Fay Vincent’s attempt to lift a preliminary injunction blocking National League realignment. . . . American League owners will meet next Wednesday in Chicago to discuss the proposed sale of the Detroit Tigers from Thomas Monaghan to Mike Ilitch.
