LOCAL NOTES : Australian Beats La Habra’s May on Playoff Hole

Jeff Woodland of Australia made a 20-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole Monday to beat La Habra’s Bob May in the completion of a playoff in the Ben Hogan Tour’s $125,000 Wichita Classic in Wichita, Kan.

Woodland and May finished the 54-hole event Sunday tied with 12-under-par, 204 totals. They played five extra holes before darkness postponed the finish to Monday at the Reflection Ridge Golf Club course.

David Warady of Huntington Beach increased his overall lead with a seventh-place finish Monday in Stage 52 of the 64-day Runner’s World Trans America footrace.

Warady covered the 47.6 miles from South Vienna to Reynoldsburg, Ohio, in 9 hours 21 minutes 5 seconds. He has a lead of 18:33:09 over Switzerland’s Milan Milanovic, who moved into second overall by winning his sixth consecutive stage with a time of 7:30:45.

Today’s race will be about 58 miles from Reynoldsburg to New Concord, Ohio.

Anne Mall of Laguna Niguel defeated Tracia Barnes of Davenport, Iowa, 6-4, 6-2, in a second-round match of the USTA girls’ 18 national championship at San Jose.

Orange’s Brandi Freudenberg, seeded fifth, lost to Corina Morariu of Boca Raton, Fla., 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, in a second-round match of the U.S. Tennis Assn. girls’ 16 national championships at San Diego.
