Cal State Fullerton civil engineering students are the most outstanding group in the nation, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The society bestowed its 1992 Robert Ridgway student chapter award on the Fullerton chapter because of its professional and public service efforts over the past year, including help for the elderly and disabled.

“This is the first time any school in the Southwest has won the award,” said William A. Litle, a lecturer in the university’s civil engineering department and adviser to the campus chapter of the society. “It’s really quite an accomplishment.”

Cal State Fullerton, with about 460 civil engineering students, is one of 242 universities across the country to have student engineering societies. Student chapters vie for the Ridgway award on the basis of their annual professional, social and public service activities.

The Fullerton chapter’s accomplishments included hosting a conference for more than 450 civil engineering students from across the southwestern United States. They also participated in the city of Anaheim’s “Paint Your Heart Out” program, aimed at helping low-income, disabled and elderly people maintain their homes. The Fullerton team not only painted a home, they built a new wheelchair ramp as part of their contribution.
