PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Knox Wants to Get Raiders on the Run

Coach Chuck Knox, a longtime member of the NFL’s conservative establishment, which believes you must establish the run to win, soon hopes to find some answers to the No. 1 question of this training camp: Who will carry the ball and the bulk of the offensive load?

When asked what he will be looking for in Saturday night’s exhibition against the Raiders at Anaheim Stadium, he said: “Some running backs who can run with the football.”

Cleveland Gary, who has sat out since suffering a strained hamstring Aug. 4, made his first appearance in pads since the injury during the afternoon workout and Knox hopes the fourth-year running back will be ready to play against the Raiders.

“He’s got a good chance to be ready,” Knox said. “He wasn’t really going full speed today, and that’s a natural thing because he’s concerned about the hamstring. But he did get through the practice and was able to participate, so hopefully he’ll be ready to go.”

Knox would also like to to see more of tackle Gerald Perry, who played only on special teams during the exhibition in Seattle last Thursday night. Perry has been hampered by swelling in his left knee.

“He’s got that knee, and when you go two-a-days, it takes a bit of a pounding,” Knox said. “After the two-a-day sessions, it seems to get a little fluid on it, and we have to rest him. But I think he’ll play more this week.”

Running back David Lang, who gained 20 yards in nine carries against the Seahawks and has been the Rams’ most impressive back in practice, did not practice because of a bruised shin bone.
