Rosina M. Becerra has been named dean of the UCLA School of Social Welfare.

University officials said Becerra is the first Latina to head a professional school at UCLA.

In announcing the appointment, UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young said: “Her distinguished record of scholarship, administrative and leadership experience, and her outstanding service to the university and the larger Los Angeles community, make her eminently suited for the deanship.” Her commitment to multiculturalism was also praised.

As a scholar, Becerra specializes in child welfare and social gerontology. Her recent work includes a six-year study of the sexual behavior of Mexican-American adolescents. She also organized a multilingual program that provided emergency counseling over the phone to more than 2,000 people affected by the Los Angeles riots.
