NOTEBOOK : Brentwood Golfer Bartman Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

David Bartman of Brentwood qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championships after finishing eighth in a field of 112 golfers Monday at Wood Ranch course in Simi Valley.

Bartman, a Brentwood High graduate, shot a 68-76 for a two-over par 144 to place fifth in his pool. It is the first time he has qualified for the tournament.

Chris Riley of San Diego and David Berganio Jr. of Sylmar each shot a two-under-par 140 to tie for first.

“I putted really well and kept the ball in play,” Bartman said. “I didn’t make any really big mistakes.”

The golfers competed on three Southern California courses. The top six golfers on each course qualified for the amateur, which will be Aug. 25-30 at Muirfield Village Golf Course in Dublin, Ohio.

“It feels great to make the cut,” Bartman said. “I’m really excited. The course is suppose to be fabulous.”

Youth tennis--Adam Gross and Lindsay Wasserman of Pacific Palisades are among the top Southern California players competing in the United States Tennis Assn. Championships at six locations nationally.

Gross won his first two matches in the boys 14 national championships at the McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio, Tex. He defeated Eric Jackson of Decauter, Ga., 6-3, 6-3, Saturday and Jeff Eicher of Bellevue, Wash., 6-3, 6-2, Monday.

Wasserman, 15, was 2-1 in girls 16 nationals at Morley Field Tennis Complex in San Diego. She defeated Katherine Chen of Richmond, Va., 6-0, 6-0, Sunday and lost to Stephy Halsell of Katy, Tex., 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, Monday.

Wasserman beat Lauren Rose of Toledo, Ohio, 6-2, 6-3, in a consolation match Tuesday.

In first-round doubles competition, Wasserman and Brigid Joyce of Los Angeles beat Laura Berendt of Orlando, Fla., and Callie Ann Creighton of Austin, Tex., 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Heavy pedal--Bryan Herta of Bel-Air finished second in the Budweiser Cleveland Grand Prix Sunday.

Herta was beaten by Franck Freon of Paris in the 32-lap race. Herta, 22, earned $11,000.

Last month, Herta won the 42-lap Molson Indy Toronto.

Seaworthy--Brian O’Mahoney of Marina del Rey and Claudia Wainer of Santa Monica won the advance division of the junior-senior sailing class Monday night at Del Rey Yacht Club.

O’Mahoney-Wainer had five points to lead the regatta. Samantha and Dan Howard of Los Angeles finished second with eight. Joshua and Harry Chatten-Brown of Los Angeles and Marla and Warren Fox of Studio City tied for third with nine points.

In the intermediate class, Landon Gottlieb and Debi Becker of Sherman Oaks finished first with three points. Second place went to the Glickman family of Bel-Air--Seth, Todd, and Diane.
