The death of a Fillmore woman who drowned in a back-yard pool Friday is being investigated by Ventura County Sheriff’s detectives as a suspicious death, authorities said.

The body of Helga Reed, 54, was found floating in the deep end of a pool in the back yard of her home in the 400 block of Foothill Road just after 5 p.m., Deputy Coroner Jim Wingate said.

No marks were visible on her body but the sheriff’s major crime unit will investigate further, Wingate said.

“It’s kind of unusual for someone to drown in their own pool,” sheriff’s Lt. Paul Anderson said in explaining the department’s interest in the apparent drowning.

An autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of death, Wingate said.

Reed, who lived alone, was discovered in the pool by friends who had dropped by to visit her. She was dead when they found her, he said.

Wingate said the woman’s son, Thomas Reed, occasionally stayed with her, and had last visited his mother the morning of her death.
