After the Riots / NEWS IN BRIEF : Transit Panel Asked to Use $3 Million for Job Training

Mayor Tom Bradley on Friday called for the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission to commit $3 million in the wake of the spring riots to job-training programs for inner-city youngsters.

Bradley, visiting teen-agers who spent the last six weeks planting and maintaining trees along the Metro Blue Line, said summer youth employment programs only partially meet the job experience needs of young people.

“As the summer ends and these students return to school, we need to secure other sources of employment,” Bradley said. “I want us to maintain the momentum by looking for innovative jobs in the future.”

About 17,000 low-income Los Angeles teen-agers worked at 1,000 public works sites this summer--about double the normal numbers--thanks to an extra $16 million in federal funds voted by Congress after the April rioting.

The mayor urged that youths be hired to do maintenance work along public transit rights of way and that they be offered construction training on transportation projects.
